James Wilson Howard, Sr. Obituary (1946

Born December 5, 1946 in Tallassee, Alabama in Macon County to the proud parents of Willie-Gladys Stamps Howard and David Lee Howard. James, also known as "Tee Tee", attended the Wall Street Primary and Secondary School in Tallassee. The family later moved to Mobile, Alabama and then to New Orleans in 1957. The family joined Carver Desire Baptist Church pastored by Rev. Morris A. Edwards III. James attended George Washington Carver Senior High School where he studied and became a drum major in the band under the directorship of Maestro Yvonne Bush. James was in the first graduation class of 1965. There he met and married the mother of his children, Sheila Howard. To that union, four children were born. Growing up, "Tee Tee" held several jobs, one of them was working with his father as a welder. If you drove down Metropolitan Street in New Orleans, you could see Mr. Howard welding on trucks in the backyard with his three sons and sometimes his daughters. "Tee Tee" also worked as a Merchant Marine for Lykes Brothers Shipping Lines as a Steward, traveling all over the world. He later worked managing two nightclubs, the Famous Theatre and The Pacedena. "Tee Tee" later moved to Galveston, Texas, where he found more work in the shipping business. It is there that he met his queen, Shelia. They were married and lived happily. They joined New Hope Baptist Church, pastored by Rev. Walter Jones. Howard found joy in serving as transportation driver and Deacon. Of all the things he found to do in life, he loved worshipping and praising the Lord. James is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John David Howard; sisters, Clara Ann Carlis and Cheryl Paul; brother-in-law, Sylvester Carlis; sister-in-law, Loria Guillory and special friends, Tyrone Green, Ernest James Miles of New Orleans, Louisiana. James is survived by a devoted wife, Shelia Brown Howard and a huge loving family of five children, Jakeem Howard (wife, Rose), Trenzetta H. Barabin, Elicia Howard, Tanya Hughes (husband, Mike) and Shariki Hill; two stepchildren; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred D. Howard (wife, Norma) and Karry D. Howard (wife, Veronica); five sisters, Henrietta J. Madison, Cynthia M. Howard, Ovader H. Lorio (husband, Jerol), Marthenetha H. Waters (husband, Elvin) and Gloria O'Neal (husband, Coach); brothers-in-law, Billy White (wife, Audrey), Raymond White (wife, Annie), Stephen Todd Guillory (wife, Felicia); sisters-in-law, Nona Leday of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Sharon Payton of Cypress, Texas, and Rebate Howard (husband, John David); a special aunt, Myra Ginny; special friends, Godfrey Green, Sister Margaret Dixon Scurry and Brother James Block along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services for James will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020. A visitation starts at 9:00 a.m. followed by a celebratory service at 11:00 a.m. Both events will take place at New Hope Baptist Church located at 5514 Avenue S in Galveston, Texas 77551. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery located at 57th Street and Avenue T 1/2 in Galveston. All memorials may be sent to the funeral home.
