PFC Rufus Hood Obituary (1968 - 2018)

On January 7, 1968, in the midst of the Vietnam Conflict, we lost one of our beloved citizens in a fire fight that claimed his entire company. Rufus Hood was enlisted into the United States ARMY and his company. Rufus along with his entire company paid the ultimate sacrifice by laying down their lives for their country. PFC Rufus Hood was awarded the following medals for his valiant service the United States Army: the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. It is with great sorrow we recall this event in the history of our country but nonetheless, it is in somber reverence that we, the Booker T. Washington Exes Alumni and the Community pause in remembrance of the 50th Anniversary of the this most tragic circumstance. Our hearts are still broken and have remained in silent submission to God's sovereign will. We celebrate knowing that PFC Rufus Hood went to war as Our Hometown Hero and he still fills that place. Rufus was the son of very proud parents, Mr. A.J. Hood and Ruth Hood of Karnack, TX. At the time of his death, he was survived by his sisters, Myrtle Hood, Jewel Hood and Bobbie Hood. Graduating from Booker T. Washington High School under the Principalship of Mr. Calvin Vincent, he was a vibrant part of the student body and a star athlete. Rufus was the Homecoming King his Senior year, an All-District Quarterback, a Starter in Basketball and very involved in Track and Field events. He was loved by all of his classmates, teachers and members of the community, young and old. He was and remains everybody's HERO. By doing so, you stop to pay reverence to all the men and women who gave all they had to insure the freedom of a nation. PFC Rufus Hood was buried in the Fitzpatrick Cemetery in Karnack, TX with full Military Honors. His parents are also buried in the same cemetery. I pray we will never forget, nor will we let it be forgotten each life that was lost in that Conflict. Seems not so very long ago. Continually, we pray for our military at home and abroad because they place their lives on the line, regardless. Thank God for the persons who stand guard over our freedom and thank you to the persons who willfully stand the watch. God Bless America.
